KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Chiefs have traded one of their most dynamic weapons.

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport first reported that Tyreek Hill has been traded to the Miami Dolphins for a package of picks.

The Kansas City Chiefs later confirmed the trade.

“It’s hard to put into words what Tyreek has meant to Chiefs Kingdom over the last six years,” Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach said. “He’s a special player, one of the best in franchise history. He’s been a large part of our success, including our Super Bowl championship run. This decision was incredibly difficult, but we felt it was a necessary move in the best interest of the team, and also for Tyreek. We wish him the best as he continues his career.”

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid echoed Veach’s words of praise for Hill.

“I am happy for Tyreek, he has grown as a man and player here in Kansas City,” Reid said. “Myself, my staff and our organization appreciate all he did for our team. This move will also benefit the Chiefs, we now have cap space and additional draft picks to grow as a football team. I wish him well as he moves forward.”

Hill will likely get a contract extension with the Dolphins and get one of the largest contracts for a wide receiver in the NFL. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Hill will get a 4-year, $120 million extension, including $72.2 million guaranteed⁩.

The Chiefs will receive a first, second and fourth round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, along with a fourth and a sixth round pick in 2023.

The Chiefs had been in discussions with Hill on a contract extension in part because they were seeking relief from a tight salary cap situation. But talks had stalled over the past few days, and Hill’s representatives requested permission to seek a trade, which came together quickly with multiple teams expressing interest in him.

The deal clears more than $18 million in salary cap space for Kansas City.

Hill appeared to indicate that his time with the Chiefs was over more than a week ago when the six-time Pro Bowl pick tweeted: “we came a long way thank you chiefs kingdom I’m forever indebted.”

Tom Pelissero reported that Green Bay Packers wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling is on his way to Kansas City Wednesday for a visit.

Hill has been named to the Pro Bowl six consecutive years. He finished last season with 111 receptions (3rd in the NFL) and 1,239 yards (7th in the league).
