Chiefs fans surprised with Mahomes’ headband after Wildcard win at Arrowhead
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Two young Wichita-area Kansas City Chiefs fans got a surprise at the end of one of the coldest games in NFL history. A gesture from one of the sport’s most popular players and the face of the Chiefs franchise added to the celebration for the fans who made the drive to Kansas City to stand in the bitter cold and watch the defending champs continue their quest for another title.
Friends Owen Smith and Gabriel Pierce walked away with Mahomes’ game-worn headband. The quarterback’s post-game routine often involves greeting fans and handing out game-worn gear, but on a night with a wind chill more than 20 degrees below zero, it wasn’t immediately clear what Mahomes would do. For Smith and Pierce, patience and being in the right spot at the right time paid off.
“He started taking his headband stuff off, walking towards me and Gabe and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m going to get something from Mahomes,’” Smith said.
The friends said they plan to put the headband with other Chiefs memorabilia displayed with photos of them at the game.
