KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Northland drivers heading to and from downtown Kansas City will experience a big change next week.

Crews will shift northbound traffic from the Buck O’Neil Bridge to one of the newly constructed river bridges. The shift is expected to take place Monday, Jan. 29, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The Missouri Department of Transportation said the traffic change will be a process. Drivers on northbound U.S. 169 Highway may notice a lane closed or crews using flags to direct traffic.

Southbound traffic will remain detoured to I-29/I-35 through fall 2024.

The traffic pattern change means drivers will no longer travel across the existing Buck O’Neil Bridge.

MoDOT said the shift will allow crews to begin working on the second river bridge. Construction to replace the bridge started in 2021. The new bridge is expected to be completed and open sometime in Dec. 2024.
