KBI identifies mother suspected of shooting, killing son

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Update Jan. 30: The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has identified 43-year-old Kylee R. Hodges as the suspect in the shooting death of her son.
The KBI said Hodges, who was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot twice by SWAT team , underwent surgery and is expected to survive.
Update: Police have identified 14-year-old Claude Hodges as the teen killed. Police said they believe he was killed by his 43-year-old mother, whom police did not identify.
Police said Claude’s father called them expressing concern for his son’s well-being, and that multiple attempts by police to reach the teen were unsuccessful.
Police negotiators spent several hours attempting to negotiate with the suspect, but after she refused to put down her handgun, she was shot twice. Police said she is hospitalized in critical condition.
Claude was found dead in the bathroom with a gunshot wound to his upper body.
Wichita Public Schools on Monday had counselors and other resources on hand for the teen’s friends and classmates.
Update 8:50 a.m.: Police say officers were sent on a welfare check of a 14-year-old at around 6 p.m. Sunday after concerned family ed the Wichita Police Department.
Officers went to the home, where the teen lived with a parent, and encountered a woman armed with a handgun inside. Officers then backed out of the home, and a five-hour standoff began.
Psychologists and negotiators were called in, and the woman inside the home was communicated to over the phone and a loudspeaker. The woman stepped outside a few times and would set the gun on the ground and pick it back up. Once, police said, she pointed it at herself.
At one point, the woman began pointing the gun at SWAT officers. SWAT fired two shots, and the woman was hit. She was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
After re-entering the home, police found the teen dead from a gunshot would. Police communicated with USD 259 to provide assistance to the teen’s school, and police are still notifying family .
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while Wichita police are investigating the teen’s death.

Officers were called to a home in the 8400 block of West Central Sunday night to check the welfare of a 14-year-old. Family told police they were concerned because they could not reach him. Police went to the home where the boy lived with a parent, and made with a woman armed with a handgun.
Officers said they spent hours negotiating with her to surrender peacefully, but early Monday morning she pointed the gun toward officers. That’s when SWAT officers fired two shots, hitting the woman. She was taken to the hospital. Officers entered the home and found the teen dead with an apparent gunshot wound.
Wichita police did not identify the people involved in the shooting, or their relationship to each other. Police said the teen was a student in Wichita Public Schools, and they made with the district to make counseling services available at the teen’s school. The KBI will investigate the officer-involved shooting, while Wichita police will investigate the teen’s death.
