Uvalde nonprofit honors Maize man for tackling suspected gunman at KC Super Bowl rally
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Trey and Casey Filter have made national headlines in the days following the deadly shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ championship rally for their heroic actions in stopping a suspected shooter.
The Maize couple was outside Union Station after the shooting when they heard yells from the crowd to stop a man that was running by them. Trey said with instinct taking over, he and another fan in attendance tackled the suspected gunman and held him down with a group until police could arrive.
At that time, Trey said he did not know if the man he tackled still had a gun, but the weapon that the couple described as an assault rifle landed at Casey’s feet.
For his bravery, Trey has been recognized as a recipient for the National HEROISM Award given by the Uvalde Foundation for Kids. The national nonprofit was created after the 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas and is dedicated to ending school violence. The Uvalde Foundation for Kids said Trey’s efforts on Wednesday helped save the lives of students.
“A day that was supposed to be a day of celebration, turned into tragedy as yet another community faced gun violence,” said foundation founder Daniel Chapin. “And yet, in the midst of the chaos, a hero stepped forward and said, simply, “Enough.” Without hesitation Mr. Filter put himself in harms way to protect others, including children. He s several this last year who deserve recognition for their selfless dedication to their fellow human beings.”
Filter s others from across the nation to have received the national award, including the officer who responded to the Allen, Texas mall mass shooter in 2023 and Nashville Police who responded to the Nashville, Tennessee Covenant School shooting.
