Royals fans make their voices heard on Opening Day ahead of stadium vote
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Royals fans made their voices heard on Opening Day. They were not just cheering on the boys in blue but about the future of Kauffman Stadium as Election Day is right around the corner.
Question 1 on the Apr. 2 ballot would extend the 3/8th cent sales tax. If approved, the Royals would head downtown while the Chiefs would renovate Arrowhead Stadium.
“I just hope that whatever happens is what the fans want and what the community wants,” said fan Matt Overle.
Fan Brian Marrs said he’s voting yes.
“I think we have to do whatever we can to keep the royals here in Kansas City if that means yes on Tuesday or a yes down the road,” Marrs said. “They are part of the pride of the city.”
Other fans said they’re voting no because they don’t want the stadium to move downtown.
“They would take our tailgating away,” said one fan. “I feel absolutely horrible. I’m not paying for something that’s already beautiful here.” Then there are fans like Jessica Beatty who aren’t sure what they’re voting on Tuesday.
“It is something that divides my soul,” Beatty said. “We are a construction company, so on the one hand, it could be really great for business, but on the other hand, we all really love Kauffman.”
If there was one thing the fans did agree on, is that it was a great day to watch some baseball.
