KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Missouri Department of Transportation and Clay County Sheriff’s Office have a warning for both drivers and residents.

Crews conducted the second blast to bring down the next span of the Buck O’Neil Bridge.

The explosion happened around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. MoDOT and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office warned that a large “boom” would be heard in the area of the bridge during that time.

The “boom” was so loud it was heard in Johnson County.

Drivers will also encounter intermittent closures on northbound U.S. 169 from 5th Street to Richards Road during the blast.

This is the second of three planned explosions that will demolish the old bridge over the Missouri River. The third will take place in May.

Crews are currently building a new Buck O’Neil Bridge that will carry traffic on U.S. Route 169 over the river.

Construction to replace the bridge started in 2021. The new bridge is expected to be completed and open sometime in Dec. 2024.
