WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The man arrested for the theft and destruction of League 42′s Jackie Robinson statue in Wichita’s McAdams Park pleaded guilty to charges against him Thursday in Sedgwick County District Court.

During a hearing late Thursday afternoon in Sedgwick County District Court, Ricky Alderate itted to helping to cut down the statue and loading it into a pickup. Alderate said, however, that he was not the one responsible for using a saw that cut most of the statue down.

Alderate said he committed the crime with the intent of selling the statue’s metal for scrap, to get money to buy drugs.

Prosecutors said they’ll recommend 15 years in prison, plus more than $41,000 in restitution.

A judge set Alderate’s sentencing for July 1.
