KC Mavericks advance to first Kelly Cup Finals
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KCTV) - The Kansas City Mavericks are moving on to the Kelly Cup finals for the first time in franchise history.
“This is the greatest hockey team in the history of Kansas City,” team owner Lamar Hunt Jr. said.
“The guys have worked so incredible hard all year,” Tad O’Had, head coach and general manager, said. “We weren’t even predicted to make the playoffs at the beginning of the year. Just very rewarding.”
“Pretty special,” goaltender Jack LaFontaine said. “I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet. I don’t think it will for a while.”
The hometown team rolled past the Toledo Walleye 7-1 in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals Monday night.
The Mavericks scored a goal in the first period, two more in the second and tacked on four in the third to take the best-of-seven series 4-2.
“I’ll tell you what, that was the most complete 60 minutes we’ve played in these playoffs,” O’Had said.
With the Bruce Taylor Trophy in Kansas City for the first time ever, the Mavericks set their sights on Game 1 of the Finals at 7:00 p.m. Friday night.
“We’re firing on all cylinders right now, and we’re ready to take on whoever’s next,” LaFontaine said.
KC will host either the Adirondack Thunder or the Florida Everblades at Cable Dahmer Arena.
“Hockey is about trophies,” Hunt Jr. said. “We’ve got the Brabham Cup, we’ve got the Taylor Cup, and now we’re going after the Kelly Cup.”
