INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KCTV) - The Kansas City Mavericks played their second game in the 2024 Kelly Cup Finals on Saturday night and came out victorious with a 5-1 win.

In the first 90 seconds of the game, the Florida Everblades scored, then spent the rest of the game shut out.

According to the Mavericks, goaltender Jack LaFontaine has a .956 save percentage– the best in the league– and stopped 35/35 of the Everblades’ remaining shots.

LaFontaine’s teammate, forward Jeremy McKenna, tied the game 1-1 just before the end of the first period, making his 10th post-season goal.

In the second period, Mavericks’ forward Max Andreev and center Jacob Hayhurst brought Kansas City up 3-1 against the Everblades. Then, for a sweeping finish, right winger Cole Coskey and another goal from Andreev ended the third period with a 5-1 win for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks victory was a much-needed retaliation against the Everblades after they suffered a disappointing 8-1 loss the night before.

Now tied 1-1, the Mavericks have a chance to bring home the Kelly Cup for the first time in franchise history, with this being their first time competing for the top spot in the ECHL since the team’s founding in 2009.

However, as one of the top teams in the ECHL, the Everblades are working hard to defend their back-to-back Kelly Cup Championship titles in 2022 and 2023.

The Kelly Cup’s next three games are in Florida at the Hertz Arena. If the finals advance to the sixth and seventh games, those will be played back at home in Independence, giving the Mavericks a chance to block a Florida three-peat and make history on their own ice.
