KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A man is recovering after he confronted a man accused of shoplifting and ended up in with a trip to a hospital.

Platte County prosecutors charged 23-year-old Jacky O. Shariff with second-degree robbery and fourth-degree assault.

According to a court document, Shariff tried to shoplift more than $800 worth of merchandise from a Target on North Ambassador Drive Friday afternoon.

The probable cause statement shows several witnesses told police that a man later identified as Shariff tried to leave Target with a cart full of unpaid items.

A loss prevention officer confronted Shariff, according to the document. Shariff then pushed to loss prevention officer into a wall before he left the store.

Detectives reported watching video from the store. It allegedly showed a Shariff loading the stolen property into a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee, according to the probable cause statement.

The document mentioned a witness recording Shariff in the parking lot. As the witness walked away from the Jeep, Shariff allegedly intentionally aimed the Jeep at the other man. The probable cause statement alleges Shariff drove the Jeep onto the curb to hit the man recording him.

Officers located the Jeep about 30 minutes later by using a license plate reader. The description of the man with the Jeep matched the ones witnesses provided. Officers detained the man and later identified him as Shariff.

Other officers responded to a Kansas City hospital to interview the injured witness.

According to the probable cause statement, the witness needed 18 staples to the back of his head and 12 stiches to his right knee to address the injuries he suffered.

The victim told investigators he walked up to the Jeep and kicked the side mirror before the Jeep hit him.

During a police interview, the probable cause statement claims Shariff itted his was shoplifting because he didn’t have any money. He also said he pushed the loss prevention officer because he was pushed first. Shariff then allegedly told investigators that it was all in the heat of the moment and he hit the witness because he was in the way.
