Jackson County legislature to discuss ordinance aimed at retaining Chiefs
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Jackson County Legislature will discuss an ordinance aimed at keeping the Kansas City Chiefs in Missouri at their next meeting.
The agenda for the June 24 regular Jackson County Legislature meeting discusses the perfection of several proposed ordinances, including Ordinance 5860, which would submit to November voters in Jackson County “a question authorizing Jackson County to impose a countywide capital improvement sales tax of three-sixteenths of one percent for a period of twenty-five years for the purpose of retaining the Kansas City Chiefs sports team in Jackson County, Missouri.”
It would provide a pathway to keeping the Chiefs in the county they’ve called home since 1963.

The ordinance makes no mention of the Kansas City Royals, who in April attempted to extend a 3/8-cent sales tax to keep the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium and authorize the baseball organization to move to the Crossroads in downtown Kansas City.
In May, Jackson County Legislator Manny Abarca announced that he submitted legislation to the Jackson County Legislature for consideration of a Chiefs-oriented tax. Abarca said he was asking for a special election to add one of two options to the Nov. 5, 2024, ballot.
“I refuse to wait for the teams to go somewhere else, so I have submitted two pieces of legislation for @Chiefs only ballot options,” Abarca said May 1.
The Monday discussion follows a Friday g from Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly of a STAR bonds bill that could help the Chiefs or Royals move across state lines.
