KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Local developers are hoping to help spur a rebirth of the Country Club Plaza neighborhood with a multi-million dollar development.

Port KC’s Board of Commissioners approved a deal Monday with Block Real Estate Services and Sunflower Development to move forward on two projects that would spread two proposed apartment complexes over three buildings.

The first project, The Madison, is a proposed 279-unit apartment building that would be in the vacant northwest corner of the intersection of Madison Ave. and 47th Street west of the Plaza. Port KC’s board approved $212 million in bonds for it.

The second project for the Plaza Corporate Center would rehab the 1970s building located at 47th and Madison, build another building and rebuild the parking garage in its neighboring north lot. Port KC said the rehab and new build would bring 321 units to the neighborhood.. Port KC’s board approved $150 million in bonds for the project.

Port KC said the projects will receive tax exemptions for 20 years and produce an additional $32.8 million in new tax revenues.

Developers will also donate $2 million to Kansas City’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund to create 162 affordable units.

Construction for both projects is expected to begin in 2025.
