KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Kansas City Royals will begin the unofficial second half of the 2024 season without outfielder MJ Melendez.

On Tuesday, the Royals announced that Melendez, 25, was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left ankle sprain.

The left fielder for Kansas City left Sunday’s 5-4 loss to the Red Sox with the injury after he grounded into a fielder’s choice in the top of the fourth inning.

Melendez was placed on the IL with the injury being retroactive to July 15. No corresponding move has been announced for the Royals, who are off until Friday due to the MLB All-Star break.

On Friday, they’ll open a nine-game homestand against the Chicago White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs.

Through the first half of the season, Melendez was hitting .192 with 11 home runs and 29 RBI.
