KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A 23-year-old man charged in the mass shooting at the Super Bowl parade and rally for the Kansas City Chiefs faces a fifth felony charge.

Lyndell Mays was already charged with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. A Jackson County grand jury charged him with causing catastrophe.

Mays was scheduled to appear in Jackson County Circuit Court on Monday for the charge. A release from the prosecutor’s office alleged that the charge is because Mays “knowingly caused a catastrophe by releasing a crowd surge or stampede of people that caused serious physical injury to 10 or more people.”

Lyndell Mays appears in court for a bond review hearing on March 5, 2024.

According to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, Mays was the first person to pull a firearm at the Feb. 14 rally before Dominic Miller, 18, fired the shot that killed Lisa Lopez-Galvan.

In total, three men and three teenagers have been charged in connection with the Feb. 14 shooting. A total of 22 individuals, not including Lopez-Galvan, were injured as a result, many of whom were children.

Miller was indicted on May 6, after nearly three months in the hospital, on the same charges.

Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker added that anyone at the parade and rally who received injuries that required medical treatment has been asked to notify her office at (816) 881-3513.
