RAYTOWN, Mo. (KCTV) - School starts in Raytown for kindergarten through seniors in high school on August 21, and teachers have an extra incentive to return to their classrooms.

The Raytown School District Board of Education approved a 4% raise for teachers that went into effect in July, and they also increased the rate of pay for teachers based on their experience and when they continue their education.

The district hopes this will help with retention; they currently have 650 certified teachers and a total staff of 1,400.

Mary Rigan is a special education teacher at New Trails Early Learning Center. She teaches children between the ages of 3 and 5-years-old.

Rigan was also a part of the negotiation for higher wages with the school board.

“We want our students to be successful, and so that means attracting the best teachers and retaining the best teachers that we have,” Rigan said. “It shows that our school board and our istration value teachers and that we all want the same thing.”

See below a list of Raytown’s teacher pay schedule for educators who work 181 days.

Another fix the school board made was rectifying the teacher pay freeze made between 2010 and 2012. The teachers who worked those school years in Raytown will receive those two years of experience back, which will also boost their pay this year.
