COFFEYVILLE, Kan. (KWCH) - The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said it’s investigating a deadly shooting in Coffeyville in which a police officer shot and killed a man while trying to make an arrest.

The KBI said this began with the Coffeyville Police Department conducting a traffic stop on a pickup truck driven by 33-year-old Derik J. Trotter, of Coffeyville, who was connected to an active investigation. Three officers from the Coffeyville PD were on scene, two of which approached Trotter’s vehicle, the KBI said.

Based on its investigation so far, the agency provided the following of what happened next.

“Preliminary information indicates that officers tried to detain Trotter to serve a search warrant for items in his possession. As they attempted to place Trotter in handcuffs, he fought back and tried to escape. During the close physical altercation that followed, two officers deployed Tasers but he continued to be combative. Then one officer fired rounds striking Trotter,” the KBI said.

The KBI said officers rendered aid and EMS transported Trotter to Coffeyville Regional Medical Center where he died. No law enforcement officers were injured.
