KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Red Friday is one of the most well-known football traditions in Kansas City. This year, the Chiefs are opening the season with a Red Wednesday.

Red Friday has been around for decades, normally celebrated as the Friday before a home football game.

Before the Chiefs’ first regular season home game, the day takes on a different meaning - by giving back.

For the 11th consecutive year, dozens of McDonald’s and Hy-Vee locations sold a collector’s flag for $5, the money raised donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Ronald McDonald House Kansas City has three Houses next door to Children’s Mercy for families to stay while their children receive treatment at the hospital.

Over the past decade, flag sales have raised over $5.5 million for the charity.

“We had to stay 105 days at Ronald McDonald House Charities and it was beautiful to watch her be able to live in the hospital and for us just to be able to be there, watch her recovery, and be there every step of the way,” Jules McBride said.

McBride is one of thousands of mothers who have received care through the years from Ronald McDonald House Charities. She said the on Red Wednesday is not going unnoticed.

The McDonald’s in Western Shawnee sold nearly 3,000 flags by 9 a.m. Most locations have already sold out, but you can still purchase a flag online.
