New scam claims to give senior citizens up to $200 cash through Evergy program
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Scammers are always looking for new ways to collect sensitive personal information, especially from vulnerable populations. Evergy is now warning about a new tactic designed to trick senior citizens into believing they will be getting $200 cash through an existing relief program.
The Evergy Cares Kansas Fund is a legitimate program designed to “help income-eligible Evergy Kansas customers to stay on top of utility bills or stop potential disconnect.” Scammers are taking advantage of the program, however, and attempting to defraud customers.
According to Evergy, people claiming to be company representatives have reached out to at least two people, telling them false information about the program and asking for personal information to get them signed up.
In a notice about the scam, Evergy said that in order to sign up for the real program, customers must reach out to Evergy themselves. Evergy will not reach out asking customers to sign up by requesting personal information.
Evergy recommends using the following tips if you suspect fraud:
- Do not pay bills anywhere except for evergy.com
- Never provide personal information through phone calls or suspicious links
- If someone comes to your door claiming to be Evergy, look for Evergy-branded clothing, vehicles, and identification badges
- Do not believe anyone who is requesting that you pay them immediately or who offers a discount
