‘We knew it was going to be something good’: Chiefs tickets surprise metro child
PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. (KCTV) - On Tuesday, the Raiche family walked into the Prairie Village Hy-Vee for a complimentary dinner and got a special surprise for their involvement in an organization that researches and raises awareness for Type 1 Diabetes.
“I didn’t think it was going to be a surprise,” said Alexander Raiche. “When they said we got tickets to Buffalo, I thought that it was really cool.”
The family was given a Chiefs gift basket which included two tickets for the Chiefs versus Bills games in Buffalo, New York, on Nov. 17 with airfare and the hotel reservation included.
“No idea that this was coming at all,” said Sam Raiche, Alexander’s dad. “Then all of a sudden, we look over and see a whole crew of people coming over, smiling faces. We knew it was going to be something good, but I don’t think anyone was expecting what happened.”
The surprise was put together by Hy-Vee and Breakthrough T1D. When he was 3, Alexander Raiche was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

“I mean, your world is just flipped upside down,” said Lauren Raiche, Alexander’s mom. “It’s been an amazing and very tough journey but having our group has been incredible.”
Since then, he and his family have been very involved with Breakthrough T1D. They hosted a neighborhood walk during COVID, participated in the annual walks, volunteered, and also took part in a clinical trial for Type 1 Diabetes.
“I raised over $30,000 dollars,” said Alexander, “so we can stop T1D.”
The annual Breakthrough T1D Walk will be on Oct. 20 at the WWI Museum starting at 11 a.m. The Raiche family will be participating through their team “Alexander’s Army.”
A few weeks after that, Alexander will be cheering on the Chiefs in Buffalo. The family says they couldn’t be more grateful to Hy-Vee and Breakthrough T1D.
“They came out with everything gluten-free that you can possibly imagine for dinner,” said Lauren. “Alexander is not only Type 1, but he’s celiac. That alone was just really heartwarming. The staff is amazing. Breakthrough T1D has been exceptional in not only helping our kid, but our whole family. They do so much for research, and they’ve answered our questions and connected us with neighbors with Type 1. I feel fortunate to have that organization that truly cares.”
