WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Update 11:30: Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter said Monday morning’s shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute.

A husband and wife were brought to the school along with their kids by a Lyft driver. Witnesses told authorities that the man shot the woman in the chest before she ran toward the school seeking help.

The man chased her, and shortly after a deputy arrived to find the man pointing a gun at the woman’s head. The deputy took cover, and when the man stepped away from the woman, the deputy shot the suspect.

The suspect resisted arrest, but he was eventually taken into custody. The suspect was hospitalized in extremely critical condition, and the victim was hospitalized in critical condition.

Update 10:25 a.m.: The Wichita Police Department said family reunification pickup will happen at the north entrance of Cessna Elementary on 45th Street South.

USD 259 and police are asking parents who choose to pick up their children to come to the school and officers at the staging location for further instructions.

Update: USD 259 has issued the following statement:

“At approximately 9:20 a.m. there was an incident in front of Cessna Elementary School involving two adults. Shots were fired, multiple police officers are involved, and the area in front of Cessna Elementary is now restricted access due to an active crime scene.

Immediately when the incident occurred, Cessna Elementary was placed on lockout (no one can enter the building) and students and staff are safe in their classrooms. We know this is a frightening situation. We will update parents with information as soon as we can. Parents are asked not to come to Cessna to pick children up at this time, as our school remains on lockout for now.”

A Wichita elementary school is on lockdown while police investigate a nearby shooting. Two people have been hurt in the shooting, one critically.

A secretary from Cessna Elementary said the school is locked down, but the shooting does not involve the school and students are safe.

Cessna Elementary is at 2101 W. 45th Street South in Wichita and the shooting happened at 47th and Clarence.
