Hockey fans return to Cable Dahmer for first AHL game held in Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Hockey fans have returned to Cable Dahmer Arena after a 125-day break to witness the first AHL game held in Kansas City.
The Kansas City Mavericks say that just after 125 days, hockey has finally returned to Cable Dahmer Arena. Mavericks and hockey fans from all over the metro had the chance to witness American Hockey League action in Kansas City for the first time.
Officials indicated that around 2,000 fans watched an intense game between the Mavericks’ AHL , the Coachella Valley Firebirds, and the Milwaukee irals. Fans were excited to see familiar faces on the ice, like Tucker Robertson, Cade Borchardt, Ryan Jones and David Noel.
Team officials noted that Milwaukee opened when Anthony Angello found the back of the net past Nikke Kokko. About 10 minutes later, the Firebirds returned with a goal from David Goyette to level the score 1-1.
The Mavericks said the second period played similarly as the irals took the lead thanks to a goal from Kieffer Bellows. however, the Firebirds quickly answered with a tally from Jani Nyman.
To start the third period, officials noted that the Firebirds made a goaltending change with Victor Ostman taking over. Unfortunately, he was greeted by a strike from Reid Schaefer about 30 seconds into the period.
The Mavericks said the Firebirds were unable to respond this time. The game concluded with a 5-2 victory for the irals in the first of a 2-game series. Both teams are expected to match up at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Cable Dahmer Arena.
