Kansas City unites to send aid to hurricane victims, more donations are needed
LATHROP, Mo. (KCTV) - Hurricane Milton comes at a terrible time for Floridians. They’re far from done cleaning up after Hurricane Helene left less than two weeks ago.
Donations and volunteers are needed more than ever. Even around Kansas City, charities and businesses are stepping up now.
The saying goes a good deed goes a long way, and in this case it’s traveling from a small Northwest Missouri Town all the way to the path of Hurricane Helene on the East Coast. But help is still needed to keep the cause growing.
Even from an independently owned tattoo parlor in Lathrop, Heather Menteer knows her community can make a difference.

“These things are actually saving lives you guys,” Menteer pleaded.
In less than a week, her shop has filled with clothes, canned food, toys and more they’ll soon ship out to Crossroads Community Church in Newport, Tennessee.
Tools and construction gear are still needed.
“They need chainsaws, they need chainsaw chains, and tools extremely bad,” Menteer explained. “So we have to start right now with getting to people and Getting trees off the roads. So, they need construction gear and PPE real bad.”
These grassroots efforts are also being made in the KC religious community like the Church of the Four Corners in Independence partnering with United in Crisis KC.
“The biggest need right now is basic toiletry items,” Pastor Jeremy Luce said. “So, anything you can think of in your medicine cabinet. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant”.
Donations can be dropped off at Church of Four Corners on Thursday, Sunday, and next Tuesday. 14300 US-40 Independence, Missouri 64136. Even from halfway across the country, each item will mean so much to those who lost so much.

“Helping others unites people and the more people that we can get to help others,” Pastor Luce added. “No matter if it’s this situation or whatever it is, unites a community together.”
“Grassroots organizations that are doing this have been essential,” Menteer said. “And this is it, this is where it’s coming from so without this there would be many more lives lost.”
Oak Street Tattoo in Lathrop, Missouri will ship out all their stuff Oct. 22. The water bottles the Kansas City Fire Department is collecting will head out after Oct. 14.
