Drivers warned that public crash information could lead scammers to their inbox
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - Drivers who have been at fault in a recent collision have been warned that public information may send scammers their way.
The Kansas Highway Patrol announced on Friday, Oct. 11, that it has been notified by neighboring agencies that reports of fraud related to publically accessible crash data have been made.
Law enforcement officials indicated that scammers have started to target drivers who appear to be at fault in a collision. These scammers have posed as first responders and attempted to solicit money with scare tactics like threats of arrest.
Investigators noted that attempts have also been made to obtain bank details. Scammers use this information from public crash logs to gather personal information and crash details.
KHP said collision data is required to be made public by state law but provides limited select information such as the date, location and parties involved. Law enforcement officials will never request money or bank information from individuals to avoid arrest or other consequences.
Kansas Troopers indicated that there are no current reports of this in the Sunflower State, however, residents should remain vigilant. If anyone encounters a similar situation, they should their local law enforcement agency immediately.
