INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KCTV) - Footage from police body cameras and dash cams could offer crucial insights into the events that unfolded at an Independence apartment complex last week, aiding investigators in piecing together exactly what happened.

Police confirmed 34-year-old Oval Spring Apartments complex in Independence.

The officers were called to the complex because of a domestic situation involving Pike, according to her family.

The Independence Police Chief confirmed an officer fired a gun during the incident. The eastern Jackson County Police Incident Investigation Team is in charge of the investigation because it involved a police officer.

Captain Kyle Flowers from the Blue Springs Police Department is leading that team.

Flowers said investigators are reviewing video from body cameras and police cars in hopes of getting answers. Officers are also interviewing witnesses.

A number of people who live at the complex said they witnessed what happened last week.

“I looked around and there was just nothing but cops everywhere,” said Heather Roszell, who lives at Opal Spring. “My neighbors around here started texting me what was going on.”

“The whole Independence police station was here,” said Lincoln Clay, who has lived in the complex for seven years. “It’s nice to know that they came on time to try to help with the situation or whatever transpired, I don’t know, but it’s sad to see. Right outside your door, it’s really sad.”

Oval Spring Apartments said it is offering counseling and other services for people who live at the complex and want to speak to someone about what happened.

The complex manager also said a vigil for Pike and Destinii is planned for Friday evening.
