Interrupted dreams get a ‘Second Chance’ in Kansas City with premiere of new talent show
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Second chances are taking center stage in Kansas City. The competition show, Second Chance Stage, executive produced by Chip and Joanna Gaines, was filmed earlier this year at Midland Theatre.
The Magnolia Network series offers contestants who have pushed their dreams aside for years a second chance at their big break. Performances range from dancing to singing to stand-up comedy and more.
Contestants compete in front of an audience full of talent scouts, agents, producers and three celebrity judges—country music superstar Martina McBride, KC’s very own Heidi Gardner and actor Taye Diggs. The show is hosted by sports broadcaster Emmanuel Acho.

In March, KCTV5 sat down with the judges to talk about their experience on the show.
“We get to give someone a second chance and a chance at $100,000 which is enough to make a difference for them and further their dream,” said McBride.
“We are moving people emotionally. We’re being moved emotionally,” Acho said. “We have cried. They have cried. We have laughed. They have laughed. This show has depth that other shows lack.”
Diggs says the show made a difference in his life.
“I had no idea I would become so emotionally invested,” he paused. “It has changed my perspective just on life. Adding a whole level of talent plus their personal story makes me look at them differently. It makes me re-evaluate my own life.”
Behind the choice to film Second Change Stage in KC: ‘The show reflects the city- authenticity’
The producers say they specifically chose to film at Midland because the 1927 structure embodies second chances through its newly renovated architecture.
“Anytime something comes to Kansas City, I feel like we as a community show up.” Gardner said. “We just embrace the really special thing happening in our city. We are actually really excited to show it off too.”
Soon, KC will be shown off to the entire world once again.
Second Chance Stage is set to premiere on Thanksgiving Day on Max. The finale will air on December 19.
