Missouri deputy shot, man and toddler found dead after domestic call for help

LAWSON, Mo. (KCTV) - A Sunday evening domestic call quickly escalated to violence, the Missouri Highway Patrol reported.
On Nov. 17, at 7:35 p.m., the Lawson Police Department was dispatched to a home in the 200 block of Montgomery Street for a domestic disturbance. They requested assistance from the Ray County Sheriff’s Office.
When officers arrived at the home, they were told a man, identified as 26-year-old Brett J. Yager of Lawson, had reportedly assaulted a woman and that they were still inside with a small boy present.
According to MSHP, the officers identified themselves to Yager and he pulled out a gun and shot at them, hitting a Ray County deputy. The officers returned fire and retreated.
Additional law enforcement agencies, including the Clay County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Tactics and Response (S.T.A.R.) team, were called to the scene. During this time, additional gunshots were heard from inside the house.
Knowing that a young child may be inside, the S.T.A.R. team entered the home around 9 p.m.
Yager was found dead inside the home, along with the 3-year-old boy. The woman from the original disturbance call was also found safe.
The Ray County deputy was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.
Lawson is about 45 minutes northeast of Kansas City off I-35 north.
