Turns out turkeys can fly through KCI
TSA dishes out what Thanksgiving items can go through security checkpoints
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The general rule from the Transportation Safety istration is that if you can pump it, pour it, spread it, or spray it, and it’s more than 3.4 ounces, it will go in a checked bag.
TSA Regional Spokesperson Mark Howell gave a demonstration at the Kansas City International Airport alongside Officer Steven Hill and Aviation Director Melissa Cooper about the do’s and don‘ts for traveling with Thanksgiving items.
Contrary to popular belief, Thanksgiving turkeys can fly and Howell said he’s seen pretty big ones make their way on the plane.
“I’ve seen them as big as 20 pounds being brought with them on travel so if you want to take it, it’s perfectly fine to do so as long as it’s frozen or it’s already been prepared,” he said.
The demonstration primarily focused on what fliers need to know after the meal is served, especially for those wanting to cram what they can.
Canned goods like cranberries, gravy, and sweet corn that are over 3.4 ounces go into a checked bag.
Dangerous utensils needed for cutting said turkey, like knives and scissors, go in the checked bag.
“As long as it’s been once you get into that happy medium, that’s when it gets a little tricky. If there’s a little juice then that’s when you have to put it into your checked bag,” said Hill.
It’s best to know the rules before standing in line to help all travelers get to where they need to be on time.
“Anytime we have to stop and do a bag check and go through the rules with each of the engers, that’s going to slow things down,” said Howell. “It could turn from a trickle to a tidal wave very quickly especially in the rush hour periods of the morning.”
TSA will not confiscate these items in the carry-on but they will ask they be brought back to the car if possible, be thrown out, or checked in at the ticket counter.
“A lot of people don’t want to leave the line, come back through screening a second time so they end up surrendering it but you will always be given an option to get rid of something if you bring it to the checkpoint,” said Howell.
Howell said Tuesday and Wednesday are going to be very busy at KCI with those traveling to their destinations and then on Sunday when people return.
