LENEXA, Kan. (KCTV) - City Council in Lenexa will soon debate whether to hold a vote that would extend a city sales tax that funds parks, public services and street repairs.

During a work session on Nov. 12, 2024, the Lenexa City Council began reviewing the 2025-2029 Recommended Capital Improvement Program. The city said the annual process outlines major capital projects it plans to build over the next five years and how those projects will be funded.

One of the CIP’s top funding sources is a voter-approved 3/8-cent sales tax. Originally ed in 2008, Lenexa city officials said the tax is set to expire in 2028. The tax currently pays for major parks, pool and trail projects, neighborhood street maintenance and playground equipment replacement programs. It also funded construction for the Lenexa Recreation Center.

Because it is currently set to expire in 2028, the final year of the 2025-2029 Capital Improvement Plan currently has no guaranteed funding source. As a result, the Lenexa City Council will discuss at its Dec. 3 meeting whether to hold a mail ballot election in 2025 to renew the additional tax through 2048.

Before City Council votes on the CIP, a public hearing will be held at that aforementioned Dec. 3 meeting. It will begin at 7 p.m. in the Community Forum at Lenexa City Hall.
