KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - It’s been two years and seven months since crews first broke ground on the main street extension to UMKC.

Today, Kansas City Streetcar is another step closer to the extension project being completed.

Mayor Quinton Lucas and Transportation officials celebrated the final track being put into place along the route.

More than 36 thousand feet of rail was used for the three-and-a-half-mile extension south of Union Station to UMKC.

KCTV5 was also able to get a look at the future Plaza transit center near Main Street and Emanuel Cleaver Boulevard. However, that will require months of testing and safety inspections before it can go into full service.

The focus now is to build and complete some of the stations along the extended route.

The goal is to be ready for service sometime next year.
