Investigation into mother, baby shot and killed by Independence officer turned over to prosecutor
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KCTV) - The special investigative team tasked with probing into the Independence police officer who shot and killed a mother and baby Nov. 7 is now in the hands of attorneys.
The Eastern Jackson County Police Involved Incident Team (PIIT) is a specialized group of agencies assembled specifically to review police shootings.
The PIIT delivered its report to the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review on Dec. 4.
The weeks-long investigation started after Independence police officers arrived at the Oval Spring Apartments on a domestic call that ended with the mother, 34-year-old Maria Pike, charging the officer with a large knife, baby in hand. The officer shot at the woman, killing both her and her 2-month-old daughter, Destinii.
The family said Pike had been previously diagnosed with postpartum depression.
The Friday before Thanksgiving Independence Police released edited body camera video of events leading up to the shooting.
