KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Since December 2001 the downtown airport has boasted the name of Kansas City fixture Charles B. Wheeler. Wheeler served as Kansas City mayor from 1971 to 1979 and ed away at age 96 in 2022.

But in a move to better market Kansas City and add clarity to the airport’s location, the Kansas City Council voted unanimously to change its name to Kansas City Downtown Airport – Wheeler Field.

The name change was led by current Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas who has served since 2019.

The airport is immediately north of the Missouri River, accessible via Highway 169 south or north on Broadway Avenue.

Marion Martin Wheeler, 70, first-born daughter of Charles B. and Marjorie Martin Wheeler died November 8.

The ceremonial placement of her cremains beneath the Wheeler Family Tree will take place at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Kansas City on December 13.
