Shawnee Mission South student arrested after authorities confiscate gun
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) - In a letter to parents, the Shawnee Mission School District confirmed that authorities recovered a weapon during Monday’s school day.
According to the Overland Park Police Department, the school went into lockdown on Dec. 9 after a student reported seeing a gun in the building.
Law enforcement officials arrested the student in possession of the gun and confiscated the weapon. Once the building was secured, the lockdown was lifted.
Overland Park police further said no shots were fired during the incident and no injuries were reported.

Shawnee Mission South High School principal, Dr. Todd Dain, emphasized that the district plans to cooperate in the investigation and follow all standing laws and policies.
“I can assure you that this matter will be handled in accordance with applicable state and federal laws and district policies,” Dain said. “I do want to assure you that we are doing everything in our power to maintain SM South as a safe and engaging learning environment. I am proud of our students and staff who navigated a challenging situation with poise and patience. We appreciate your .”
The Overland Park Police Department thanked the student who reported the gun for their role in keeping other students safe.
