OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) - Culver’s ed of the Kansas City Mavericks to spread holiday cheer to families in an Overland Park hospital’s NICU and pediatric facilities.

The Kansas City Mavericks say that on Friday, Dec. 13, team ed Culver’s, Big Biscuit and Donutology to bring comfort and joy to local families this holiday season.

Culver’s officials said they provided more than 40 meals to families and staff in the NICU and pediatric facilities at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center and the Ronald McDonald House.

Mavericks leaders indicated that the initiative was meaningful to the organization, touched by the struggles of NICU care. Mavericks COO James Arkell shared how his family’s experience shaped the team’s commitment to those in similar situations.

“Our child was born prematurely and had to be in the NICU,” said Arkell. “The guy who plays Santa is actually the doctor that saved our family. We want to give families a chance to take a breath.”

Team officials noted that Mac, the Mavericks’ mascot, was ed by Santa and Buddy the Elf as they visited rooms in the NICU to spread holiday cheer to families during an overwhelming time. The Culver’s team also provided stuffed animals to brighten the day for young patients.

“Over the years we’ve done this, it’s been different people, but the same reactions of relief and a smile,” Arkell said. “It’s so important for us to be here around the holiday season.”

Meanwhile, the Mavericks said families at the Ronald McDonald House, which provides to those with children undergoing extended medical treatments, also spent time in the limelight. Meals from Culver’s, Big Biscuit and Donutology provided a small moment of comfort during an otherwise stressful time.

With a child in the NICU or pediatric care, team noted that families can be emotionally and physically exhausted, especially during the holidays. The Mavericks understand these challenges and want to make a difference for families in their community.
