Affidavit reveals new information about Overland Park standoff
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) - An affidavit has revealed that an 8-hour standoff in Overland Park in October may have been the result of a domestic incident.
An affidavit filed in the Johnson County, Kansas, District Court that was released on Thursday, Dec. 26, has revealed that Robert M. Humes, 43, has been charged in connection to a standoff spurred by threats made to a family member.
Law enforcement officials said that on Oct. 1, they were called to a home in Shawnee with reports that Humes had threatened to shoot a family member. He allegedly sent text messages that revealed a plan to come for more than one family member with a shotgun that included a link to a song called “Angel of Death.”
Family reported to law enforcement officials that Humes had taken a firearm from his safe less than a week before the incident.
As law enforcement officials investigated, they said the victim received a phone call with Humes while they were present. As he was on speakerphone, he allegedly continued to make threats.
Around 5:20 p.m., investigators said Humes barricaded himself inside a home near 88th Terrace and Melrose St. as they attempted to serve an arrest warrant. The standoff that ensued lasted nearly 8 hours. It ended around 1:20 a.m. on Wednesday with Humes in custody.
As a result, Humes has been charged with four counts of criminal threat and a single count of interference with law enforcement. A plea hearing has been scheduled for 10 a.m. on Jan. 17, 2025.
Court records revealed that on Oct. 16, Humes was again charged, this time with aggravated assault and domestic battery. He is set to face a plea hearing in this case on Jan. 30.
As of Thursday, Dec. 26, Humes remains behind bars on two $50,000 bonds and a $25,000 bond. No further information has been released.
