KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - An elderly couple has been identified as the victims of a fatal and illegal Kansas City street race that took place before the new year as charges are considered for the other drivers involved.

The Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department says investigators have identified the victims of an illegal street race that took place earlier in the week as 72-year-old Diane Zugenbuhler and 91-year-old Verne Zugenbuhler.

Law enforcement officials said the pair had been attempting to turn left onto Carondelet Dr. from Wornall Rd. around 10:25 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 30, in their Honda CRV. However, a speeding black Chrysler 300 and a silver Dodge Charger who were racing got in the way.

Investigators noted that the Chrysler hit the CRV with such force that both Zugenbuhlers were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Chrysler was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“Investigators continue to work with prosecutors for determination of applicable charges,” said a KD spokesperson.

No further information, including the identity of the other drivers, has been released.
