Kansas City Macy’s location on list of dozens of locations expected to close

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Macy’s announced it plans to close dozens of stores as it tries to slim down amid falling sales.
A Kansas City-area Macy’s location is one of the stores on the list to close.
Macy’s said Kansas City’s Metro North Mall location at 400 NW Barry Road underperformed and is expected to close as early as next month. It is the only Macy’s location that remains on the Missouri side of the Kansas City metro.
“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores,” Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, said.

Liquidation sales are expected to begin later in January and will last about six-weeks.
The Macy’s stores in Lee’s Summit and inside Independence Center previously closed.
The following locations are expected to remain open in the Kansas City area:
- Oak Park Mall
- 11201 W. 95th Street, Overland Park
- Town Center Plaza
- 5100 W. 119th Street, Leawood
As part of its future strategy, Macy’s said it will upgrade 350 stores with plans to add more salespeople through 2026.

“People have endless options when it comes to where and how they shop. Macy’s customers expect seamless shopping experiences and continuous improvements both in-store and online to meet those expectations,” the company shared in a news release.
A spokesperson for Macy’s said the department store remains focused on bringing an enhanced customer experience to more locations nationwide and through its digital channels.
