What comes next for clearing KCK neighborhood streets
Kansas City, KS (KCTV) - Some neighborhood streets are still in rough shape, almost a week after the storm hit. Neighbors in Kansas City, KS hope they’ll finally see some plows come through soon. It’s been a fun week for the kids of course in KCK, but parents want to know when things can get back to normal so they can go to work?
Za’laiia Harter has spent what would normally be a school week making snow angels and playing with her siblings.
“We will make some Pina Coladas with some snow,” Harter plans.
But when they can’t go to school, their mom can’t go to work.
“I was off Tuesday, Wednesday, they went back yesterday and today I had to cancel,” Ruth Thomas said. “I’ll have to pick up extra shifts this week.”
Leaving her hopeful their streets finally get cleared.
“They could have done better but at the same time we appreciate everything they’ve done,” Thomas added.
Dave Reno with the Unified Government’s Public Works team has a message for parents like Ruth.
“The snow crew has not forgotten you. They are out, they are working hard and they’re going to keep at it,” Reno assured. “Until the streets are safe so everyone can get back to school.”
Reno explained his team did not face any setbacks from the snow Thursday night. Each of Kansas City, KS 200 snow routes have also been plowed at least twice as of Friday morning. Geographically, Reno says KCK crews also face more challenges than other cities, that take longer to complete the job.
“Some of the streets we have were built before cars were invented,” Reno explained. “They’re that old, so they’re just not built to handle giant snowplows. So, it’s even harder for us to get down those roads cleared to.”
All weekend Reno and his team will prioritize neighborhoods. Meantime, Harter will soon switch her focus to studying after being out of school for so long.
“Me and my sister have been practicing math,” Harter said. “Like she’s been telling me math equations and we’ve been trying to get them correct.”
If you feel your street anywhere in Wyandotte County still needs treatment, you can call the Unified Government at 3-1-1.
