Liberty first responders help save mother, baby from car in icy creek

LIBERTY, Mo. (KCTV) - Liberty police and fire saved a woman and her baby from a car that had rolled and lodged in an icy creek.
The crash and rescue operation occurred Tuesday morning. Police said when officers arrived, the vehicle was on its driver’s side with engers trapped.
When an officer and assistant fire chief started to approach the vehicle, ice gave way, submerging an officer up to his waist in the cold water. Still, the officer continued using a tool to break the windshield allowing the driver to escape.
Liberty Police said firefighters then removed the remainder of the windshield, allowing an officer to crawl through to the back seat and reach a 6-month-old secured in a car seat.
Police said the driver and her baby were taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment. The officer who was in the frigid water for a prolonged period of time was also transported for evaluation.
“We are proud to share this story as just one spotlight on the dedication of our officers and the LFD show to our community every day,” police said in a Facebook post Wednesday afternoon.
