Many Chiefs fans hope for another Super Bowl celebration as KC leaders focus on doing so safely
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - All eyes are on the Kansas City Chiefs as the team starts its journey to another Super Bowl, if they make it to the final stop, will the city get another parade and rally?
The Chiefs banners are up and the Fan Zone is ready over at Union Station as the Chiefs take on the Houston Texans on Saturday.
Three games stand in the way of a three-peat for the Chiefs.
“It is happening nobody can stop it, you know the Chiefs are on a mission and they’ve got the best fans in the world,” said Chiefs fan, Daniel Myer.
Last year, thousands of fans made their way to downtown Kansas City for the parade and rally.
Near the end of the celebrations, excitement turned to tragedy as shots were fired.
Lisa Lopez-Galvan lost her life that day and many others were shot or injured.
Now, the city is looking at ways another celebration could happen safely.
“We look at all options, not that we take options off the table it is instead that we are saying Kansas City is a place that has big events that does big things and we are going to make sure that we continue to do that,” said Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Quinton Lucas.
Many fans said they want the Chiefs to be celebrated if they win the Super Bowl.
“We need a parade, we need a rally we need to come together to show that we are not afraid of what happened in the past and we are moving forward that is what the Chiefs are all about that is what Kansas City is all about we are resilient,” said Myer. He added, “There is always that concern there is always that after-thought of could we do this better, could we do that. You plan the best you can and the only thing you know is that plan isn’t always going to go as you want it to and things are going to change but I think everybody’s been doing the best they can every single year that we’ve been doing this and we are continuing to put forward our best efforts.”
No location is official for where a parade or rally would happen.
“I think in of decisions made right now I think there is a decision made if we are so lucky and it is still knock on wood we will continue to have celebrations like we have had in years past. I think in of where we would look to do it, downtown Kansas City is always an important part of how we celebrate and bring our community together,” said Mayor Lucas.
As for ways to change it, ideas are floating around such as a longer parade or a ticketed event.
“You ought to have a big fence around it or something and maybe scan for weapons or something make it a little safer for people that seems like it would be a good idea because when it is open people can just come and do as they please,” said Chiefs fan, Charles Richardson.
Mayor Lucas said they do take into consideration last year’s incident, but also recent events such as the tragedy in New Orleans.
“Looking at what just happened in New Orleans the crazy guy driving the truck yes do everything you can to protect it but we shouldn’t stop celebrating,” said Chiefs fan, Verna Terrell, who is visiting from Texas.
“I have no doubt as we all work together with law enforcement with event planners with our business community and others we will build the best possible event that we have. For those who still don’t feel safe in large settings, I understand that and I get that and I get that for folks who are thinking about that either from their family perspective or otherwise and I won’t begrudge anyone that thought of the fact that maybe want to watch it on television or something else what we will continue to do though in Kansas City is make sure that we make a forum and an opportunity for people to come together to celebrate,” said Mayor Lucas.
On Thursday, KD shared in a statement with KCTV5 regarding another big celebration.
“The KD will continue to work with our partners on the collaboration and discussion of different ideas and ways that we can create a more safe, secure, and enjoyable environment for all attending any event held in our city.”
He shared that if the Chiefs win the Super Bowl, the city will follow its past timeline of announcing celebration details after the win.
KCTV5 reached out to the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Sports Commission, and Union Station for comment on this story, but all referred us back to the City for details.
