Northland prepares for Chiefs playoffs run with Red Friday
NORTH KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Kansas City Chiefs were originally the Dallas Texans before Owner Lamar Hunt moved the team to Missouri in 1963.
Finding original Chiefs gear that has a Dallas Texans logo on it is nearly impossible, but there is one item that has survived and it’s on display at Chappell’s Restaurant and Sports Museum.
“I have the Dallas Texans Lenny Dawson warm-up shirt,” Founder Jim Chappell said. “That’s probably the most valuable thing because Lamar Hunt – who used to give tours in here – he took all of the Dallas Texans stuff off and put Chiefs on them when he moved here.”
The training top is signed by Len Dawson and is near the entrance of the restaurant.
That’s not the only Chiefs-related item, footballs, jerseys, and pictures that are signed by Chiefs players between 1969 on the current roster are on the walls everywhere you can look.
There are two locked glass cases that have even more memorabilia – like a ticket to Super Bowl 10 that had a face value of $20 in 1976.
“You’re not going to find a better gem in the whole metro, this place is an absolute museum,” NKC Mayor Brant Delong said. “And when the historian is in the house, it’s even more impactful.”
Chappell stopped at multiple tables during a tour he gave KCTV5 to talk with customers. During this time he’d stop to ask them where they went to school, and then tell them where they could find that team’s football helmet.
“People find that amazing because I’ve got a thousand helmets,” Chappell said.
He has also given away a lot of memorabilia over the years. He gifted a special football from the Dallas Texans win over the Houston Oilers in the 1962 AFL Championship to the Chiefs back in 2023. The football is on display in the team’s Hall of Fame at Arrowhead Stadium. The football was signed by Len Dawson.
