2 arrested after Facebook Marketplace seller pepper sprayed, dragged beside car
LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. (KCTV) - Two women have been arrested after they pepper sprayed a seller on Facebook Marketplace in Lee’s Summit and dragged him alongside their vehicle before an inter-state chase with law enforcement.
The Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Police Department says that around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, emergency crews were called to the parking lot of a business near Ansel Adams and SW 3rd St. with reports of a robbery.
When first responders arrived, they said they found a victim who had come to the parking lot to sell an iPad to a Facebook Marketplace buyer. When two women arrived, the man reported he had leaned into the vehicle to gather Venmo information when the enger pepper sprayed him.
Investigators indicated that the women were later identified as Daqrtiona C. Rollins, 24, and Auzanai Jones, 25, both of Kansas City.
Law enforcement officials noted that the women attempted to drive away as they dragged the victim alongside the vehicle. During the incident and unknown to the suspects the victim’s phone was dropped in their vehicle before they let him go.
As a result, the victim suffered multiple lacerations and broken bones.
Investigators said they were able to track the victim’s phone to an address in Kansas City, however, the driver attempted to speed away from officers. A police chase started which continued across state lines.
When Rollins and Jones were finally taken into custody, they were arrested and charged with robbery and assault. If convicted, they could each face up to 19 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
“The case serves as a good reminder to always be vigilant about safety when meeting buyers or sellers for online transactions,” said a spokesperson for the Lee’s Summit Police Department.
Police noted that there is a designated internet exchange area in the front parking lot of the Lee’s Summit Police Department station. The space is well-lit and has surveillance cameras.
As of Wednesday evening, Jones remains behind Wyandotte County, Kansas, Detention Center bars while Rollins has been released. No hearings have been scheduled in the case yet. No further information has been released.
