Missouri organizations called on to help feed hungry children over the summer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Organizations across the Show-Me State have been called on to help Missouri’s most vulnerable maintain access to nutritious meals over the summer.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services announced on Friday, Jan. 31, that it needs community non-profits to help feed thousands of children who would otherwise not have access to healthy meals during the summer or in times of emergency. Congregate and non-congregate feeding sites are needed throughout the state.
Department leaders noted that the Summer Food Service Program reimburses these organizations for meals served to children who are at risk of not having access to meals over the summer. This is one way Missouri works to fight childhood hunger.
According to the Department, organizations that choose to sponsor the program will help ensure children in underserved areas get nutritious meals when not in school. Eligible organizations include non-profits, camps, and local government entities. Sites qualify in areas where at least half of children are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
Health officials indicated that the federally funded program is istered by the DHSS, which will accept applications from new organizations between March 1 and May 15. Interested organizations should apply with the training provided.
