KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Fifty-year-old Armando Navarro has been charged with the shooting deaths of three women and a dog early Sunday, court documents state.
Officers with the Kansas City Police Department were called to a home in the 4100 block of NW 65th Street around 12:40 a.m. on Feb. 2 on reports of a shooting.
According to records filed by the Platte County Prosecutor’s Office, the caller told dispatch that a woman had knocked on her door, claiming someone had shot at her.
When officers arrived at the home in question, they found three women inside suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. All three died at the scene, as well as a dog who was shot. There was one surviving victim whose identity has not been released.
The women who died were later identified as 24-year-old Hailey Hopcus, 49-year-old Jodie Hopcus and 73-year-old Sherri Duncan.
They were confirmed to be related as granddaughter, daughter, and grandmother, respectively. The surviving victim is Hailey Hopcus’s sister, Jodie Hopcus’s daughter and Duncan’s granddaughter.

According to court documents, the victim who survived told police her mother– Jodie Hopcus- and her boyfriend, Navarro, had been arguing — “something that happens quite often.”
As the surviving victim was getting ready for bed, the conflict escalated. For about an hour, Navarro and Jodie Hopcus argued back and forth as she asked him to leave and he begged to stay, saying he had nowhere to go.
Eventually, Navarro started going back and forth from his room to the kitchen and the victims believed he was gathering his things to leave; however, he soon produced a small handgun, the surviving victim said, and began shooting at them. He allegedly wounded Jodie Hopcus in the arm.
The surviving victim continued in her testimony, stating that when Navarro ran out of bullets he grabbed a kitchen knife and then a larger firearm, which he held under his chin “as if he was going to shoot himself.”
Jodie Hopcus tried to shield the surviving victim with her body, but when she tried to get to the door to escape, Navarro shot her in the head. The grandmother, Duncan, was already lying on the ground “motionless.”
As the surviving victim tried to escape, she said Navarro shot at her and she felt “felt the projective hit her hair.” She hid at a nearby home and heard Navarro call her name before he got into a car and drove away.
Investigators determined Navarro left the scene in a white 2020 Ford Expedition with California plates that were ed to one of the victims. The car was later found in Abilene, Kansas, and Navarro was taken into custody by the Dickinson Sheriff’s Department and Kansas Highway Patrol.

Court documents further stated that around 2 a.m., a man who identified himself as Navarro’s son called police to ask them to check on the victims. His father had reportedly called and told him he “killed them all.”
Navarro is currently being held in the Dickinson County jail. He is facing numerous charges related to the incident:
- 4x armed criminal action (felony)
- 3x first-degree murder (felony)
- 1x animal abuse (misdemeanor)
- 1x first-degree assault (felony)
His first court appearance has not yet been scheduled.
