KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Kansas City man charged with murder in the deaths of three women returns to the area where the crime happened.

Armando Navarro, 50, was booked into the Platte County Jail on Feb. 5, according to the sheriff’s website.

Officers arrested Navarro Sunday morning west of Topeka. Investigators said Navarro’s car ended up in a ditch. He tried to run from officer before they took him into custody.

Navarro waived his right to an extradition hearing and returned to Platte Custody Wednesday.

He is charged with the following crimes:

  • 4 counts of armed criminal action (felony)
  • 3 counts of first-degree murder (felony)
  • animal abuse (misdemeanor)
  • first-degree assault (felony)

Kansas City police officers responded to a 911 call from a house near NW 64th Street and N Green Hills Road around 12:40 a.m. on Feb. 2.

When officers arrived at the home, they found 24-year-old Hailey Hopcus, 49-year-old Jodie Hopcus and 73-year-old Sherri Duncan. The women suffered gunshot injuries and died at the scene. Investigators said a fourth victim survived the shooting.

According to charging documents, the surviving victim told investigators that Jodie Hopcus and Navarro, Hopcus’ boyfriend, were arguing before the shooting. The argument escalated and Hopcus told Navarro to leave the house.

At some point he grabbed a gun and started shooting, according to court documents.

The documents also show that a man called police around 2 a.m. He identified himself as Navarro’s son. The caller asked police to check on the people at the house. He then told dispatchers that Navarro called him and said he “killed them all.”

Navarro was denied bond, according to Platte County Jail records. A court appearance in Jackson County court has not been scheduled yet.
