NEW ORLEANS (KCTV) - There are several reasons why the Kansas City Chiefs are back in the Super Bowl for the third straight year and fifth time in the past six seasons. But at the center of Kansas City’s consistency is the man who’s been leading the team for over a decade.

“I’ve been put in leadership positions from the time I was younger,” head coach Andy Reid said. “Team captains and such. Very fortunate that way. I don’t know where it comes from, probably the way I was raised.”

Wherever Reid got his abilities, his players feed off his leadership in everything they do.

“I owe everything to that man in my career,” said Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

Kelce was the second man drafted during Reid’s first season in Kansas City and his career has been molded by the legendary head coach.

“My brother was with him in Philly for a couple years,” Kelce said. “The biggest thing my brother was like, ‘take advantage of the opportunity.’ He’s a player’s coach but at the same time he’s going to hold you able.”

Reid established himself in the NFL as an offensive genius and has further cemented that as one of the winningest head coaches in league history. Thursday night, he’s a nominee for the NFL’s Coach of the Year award -- which he’s remarkably only won once in his 26 seasons as a head coach.

“It’s about the game. It’s not about all of this,” Reid said during Super Bowl week festivities in New Orleans. “It’s important for you guys and the league and the fans for this, but the most important thing for the football players and the coaches is that you function well in the biggest game of the year.”

That mentality has Reid’s Chiefs on the precipice of history.
