WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Some congressional Democrats introduced a resolution on Wednesday that condemns President Donald Trump’s pardons of those charged in the Jan. 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol riot.

“My colleagues and I are introducing a resolution which is condemning the president’s pardons of the violent criminals, let me say that again, the violent criminals, who assaulted police officers and broke into the Capitol building just over four years ago,” said Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, (D-NJ).

The lawmakers said they were introducing the measure to stand up for U.S. Capitol Police officers who defended the Capitol on the day of the attack.

“These were insurrectionists attacking their government, and in this democracy, that should never happen,” said Rep. Bennie Thompson, (D-MS), who led a House committee that investigated the attack.

“Here’s where we are. They pardoned criminals for violently assaulting cops, and they fire FBI agents and prosecutors for doing their jobs. That’s where we are in America today,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, (D-MD), who also served on the House committee that investigated the attack.

Alongside the lawmakers were family of Brian Sicknick, one of those officers who died a day after responding to the attack.

“On January 20th, 2025, a convicted felon and twice impeached politician pardoned approximately 1,600 criminals responsible for the destruction of property and the destruction of the lives of law enforcement and their families, such as mine,” said Ken Sicknick, a brother of Officer Sicknick’s.

A House resolution is not binding law. The resolutions are created to express the opinion of the House on a particular event, person or issue.

The resolution is unlikely to be adopted in the House, where Republicans currently hold the majority.
