Bonner Springs sets restrictions for hotels, rides at Mattel Adventure Park
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Leaders change zoning while setting restrictions for the building of a new amusement park in Bonner Springs.
of the Bonner Springs City Council approved an ordinance creating a new zoning district at the southwest corner of 118th Street and State Avenue on Feb. 10. That’s the site planned for Mattel Adventure Park.
City staff said it considered other cities with similar attractions while researching and writing developing the plan.
"Looked around at the other municipalities that have this same venture going on in Arizona, as well as Branson, as well as Tulsa and a few other entertainment-specific districts," Mark Lee, Bommer Springs Community and Economic Director, told council .
The district establishes height restrictions for new buildings while also limiting the height of certain amusement park rides.
Lee told council that buildings in the district would be able to be a total of 10 stories tall. He said most would be nine floors or less with equipment on the roof.
Certain thrill rides at the amusement park would need to be 120-feet or less, unless at least 50% of the ride is transparent. Certain roller coasters fall into the later category and will be restricted to 300 feet.
Last year Epic Resort Destinations announced plans to build a $115 million Mattel Adventure Park. The park is expected to open next year.
