Investigation continues after shooting with police leads to chase along I-70
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Police continue to investigate two scenes at opposite ends of the city after a shooting between police and an alleged carjacking suspect led to a chase along snowy I-70 in Kansas City.
Police say the chain of events started at 4 p.m. The Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department said officers were directed to a suspect in a carjacking that happened earlier Wednesday morning and caught up with him near the 9th and Van Brunt Amphitheatre. At some point, police and the suspect exchanged gunfire.
KD Sgt. Phillip DiMartino said no one was hit by the gunfire. However, department protocol for investigating a police shooting remains the same.
Investigators indicated that they found the suspect near 9th and Van Brunt before shots were fired. The suspect ran, got into a vehicle and attempted to speed off. However, officers chased the driver to I-70 and I-35 where the pursuit ended and the driver was taken into custody.
It’s unclear what led the vehicle to stop on the Lewis and Clark Viaduct just east of the Kansas state line. KCTV’s First Warn 5 Weather Tracker drove past the scene and saw several bullet holes in the driver’s side window of the vehicle, which also had airbags deployed.
“We’re thankful that no one was hurt, that is the main thing that is on my mind right now,” DiMartino said. “Thankful it ended the way it did.”

“We’re going to do a thorough investigation,” KD Sgt. Phillip DiMartino told KCTV5. “There’s physical evidence on the scene, but we only get one opportunity collecting that evidence. So we’re going to secure the scene, we’ll be here as long as it takes to make sure that we get it right.”
