LENEXA, Kan. (KCTV) - On Wednesday, Lenexa police found two women dead inside a home, and a man was taken into custody. Police said they have responded to this home multiple times since Sunday, Feb. 9.

Around 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Lenexa police received a call for a welfare check and it was believed the people inside had been shot.

“The circumstances and individual that precipitated the initial call that led us to the welfare check is still under investigation at this time,” said Lenexa Police Public Information Officer Danny Chavez.

Police went to the home of West 90th Street near Lackman Road.

They found two women dead inside. The Johnson County Crime Lab and the Johnson County Medical Examiner are assisting in the investigation.

Later in the morning, a man was arrested in Liberty, Missouri.

The three are believed to be related, Lenexa police have not released their identities as of Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The two women appeared to have been shot, but police are still determining exactly what happened.

“People say this all the time but it is shocking that something like this would happen in this quiet neighborhood,” said neighbor Dave Webster.

Neighbors said they saw police at the same home on Tuesday around 5 p.m. Police said it was a disturbance call.

“I thought that was very odd so they talked for quite a while finally at the end the man shook hands with the officer and went back up towards the house,” said Webster.

Since Sunday, Lenexa Police said they’ve responded to this home two times for disturbance calls.

“It is too bad that they couldn’t have asked the police to arrest this person last night,” said neighbor Linda Wood.

She has lived in the area for 33 years and knew one of the women who died in this tragedy.

“I just wish something could have prevented that,” said Wood.

Officer Chavez said the case is still under investigation but it appears to be an isolated incident and a domestic situation.

“In Lenexa, we don’t see much violent crime at all, let alone homicides,” said Officer Chavez.

Since 2020, homicide rates have stayed mostly low for Lenexa, but have slightly increased in the last year.

Lenexa Police also shared their homicide data from the last half-decade:

  • 2025 - 1 (If Wednesday’s two are ruled homicides, it will be 3). The other was a fatality DUI crash on Jan. 17, 2025
  • 2024 - 4
  • 2023 - 1
  • 2022 - 2
  • 2021 - 1
  • 2020 - 0
  • 2019 - 0

“It is alarming, it is a very sad thing and of course, our thoughts are with the family and the loved ones of our victims in this case,” said Chavez.

Neighbors want to see someone held able for these two lives lost.

“I think people need to be more responsible not go off half-cocked and do something everyone regrets,” said Webster.

Police do not have any concerns for this neighborhood and shared if you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, call law enforcement or find resources in your area.
